Christmas Cup
The Draw
The draw was made in the Clubhouse with all the teams present. Each team captain drew a ball numbered one to eight, the number determining their group and group position. Teams would play the other three teams in their group to determine a one to four order.
To try and force a distinct finishing order within each group, the 'single-shot-penalty' rule was added. For group games that ended in a draw this rule had the two captains called for a coin toss, with the coin toss winner deciding whether his team would SHOOT or STOP, in the one penalty to be taken. If the penalty was scored then the striker's team was given the goal and the three points. If the penalty was stopped or missed, then the goalkeeper's team was given the goal and the three points. This approach was fast to complete and meant no group games finished as a draw.
Following the group stage, it was into the knockout rounds with the top two from each group competing in the semi-finals. For those lower placed teams it was a single last match to determine the five to eight positions.
